Random team generator

Paste the names, choose how many teams or how many people per team, and get fair teams in one click. Balance them by skill when some players are stronger.

How to split

12 people

12 names

Paste a column from a spreadsheet, or type. Max *3 gives Max skill level 3 when you balance by skill.

How to make random teams

  1. Type or paste the names, one per line. A column from a spreadsheet or a class list file works as it is.
  2. Choose how to split: Teams for a number of teams, Team size for people per team, or Pairs. The line below shows what you will get, for example 3 teams of 4.
  3. Press Make teams. Everyone is shuffled and dealt into teams that differ by at most one person. Not happy with them? Press Shuffle again.
  4. Click a team name to rename it, then Copy the teams into a chat, Print them for the wall, Share them as a link or Present them on the board.

What people make teams for

PE and sports

Split the class for football, volleyball or a relay race in seconds. Turn on Balance by skill and give stronger players a level, like Max *3, so one team does not get all the fast runners.

Group work in class

Make groups of four for a project or pairs for peer marking. Print the groups or show them on the projector, and nobody argues about who picked whom.

Five-a-side and game night

Thursday football, a board game evening, a pub quiz: paste who turned up, pick two teams and send the line-up to the group chat with Copy or Share.

Workshops and team building

Mix people from different departments into breakout groups, or pair up colleagues for a coffee chat. Rename the teams after rooms or table numbers.

Questions about making teams

Are the teams really random?

Yes. The secure random generator built into your browser shuffles the list and deals it into the teams, so every person has the same chance of landing in any team, next to anyone else. With balancing on, players of the same level are still placed at random. Nothing is sent to a server.

How does balancing by skill work?

Write a level after a name, like Anna *3, and turn on Balance by skill. Anyone without a level counts as 1. The strongest players are placed first, each into the team with the lowest total so far, then players are swapped until the totals are as close as they can get. Each team card shows its total.

What if the numbers do not divide evenly?

Teams never differ by more than one person: 10 people in 3 teams gives 4, 3 and 3. With Team size, no team is bigger than the size you set. In Pairs, an odd count gives one group of three, so nobody is left alone.

What if I ask for more teams than there are people?

You get one team per person and a note saying so. Lower the number, or switch to Team size and say how many people each team should have.

Can I name the teams?

Yes. Every team starts with a ready-made name. Click a name on a team card to change it, or write your own list under Team names. Your names are kept for next time, and Default names brings the originals back.

How do I send the teams to everyone?

Copy puts the teams on the clipboard as plain text, ready for WhatsApp, Slack or email. Share makes a link that opens exactly these teams; the names travel inside the link and never reach a server. Print gives a clean page with just the teams.

Is it free, and where are the names stored?

It is free, with no sign-up. The names are saved only in this browser, so we never see them. If ads appear on this site, they stay below the tool: never on the teams and never in Present mode.
