How to draw a letter
- Press Draw a letter. The letters flick past for a moment and one lands on the card.
- Everyone writes a word for each category that starts with that letter: a country, an animal, a name, a food, whatever your list says.
- Want rounds to end on their own? Switch on the countdown under Timer. A horn sounds when time is up.
- Press Next letter for the next round. Letters already drawn stay out until you press Start over.

Where a random letter helps
Scattergories at home
Lost the die, or it rolled under the sofa? The page does the same job: a fair letter each round, one timer for the whole table and no arguing over a letter that came up twice.
In the classroom
Letter games are quick vocabulary practice: an animal, a verb and a city starting with M. Present mode shows the letter big enough for the back row, and the timer keeps the round moving.
Car trips and waiting rooms
Pass the phone around. One person draws, everyone calls out words, and the first to fill every category takes the round. Once loaded, the page works offline.
Warm-ups and icebreakers
Ask each person to share one thing about themselves that starts with the drawn letter, or open a meeting with a fast round of five things beginning with that letter.

Questions about the random letter
Which letters are left out?
By default Q, U, V, X, Y and Z, the same six letters the Scattergories die skips, because few words start with them. Open Letters and tap any letter to take it out or put it back. Your choice is saved in this browser.
Can the same letter come up twice?
Not in the same game. Each drawn letter is crossed out and stays out until you press Start over. When every letter has been used, the big button starts a new game for you.
Is the draw really random?
Yes. Every letter still in the game has exactly the same chance. The secure random generator built into your browser picks the letter before the short roll starts, and the animation cannot change it.
How does the timer work?
Switch it on under Timer and choose anything from 30 seconds to 3 minutes. It starts by itself when a letter lands, can be paused, and ends with a horn and a shaking card. Turn the sound off if the visual cue is enough.
Which categories work well?
Classics are country, city, river, animal, plant, first name, food, job and brand. For young children keep it to four or five easy ones; for adults add harder ones like a film title, a famous person or something you find in a kitchen.
Can I show the letter on a projector or TV?
Press Present. The letter, the timer and the strip of used letters fill the screen with no menus around them, and the space bar or a presentation clicker draws the next letter.
Do I need to sign up or install anything?
No. The page runs in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer, keeps working offline once loaded, and saves your letters and history only on your own device.
